Government of Canada Launches New Apprenticeship Service Program

The Government of Canada has launched a new Apprenticeship Service program to help overcome financial barriers employers face to hire and train first-year apprentices.

The federal government will invest $247 million in employer supports across Canada. Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF) is the recipient of $45 million of that funding to administer grants to employers who hire new first-year apprentices in 39 Red Seal trades.

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) will provide financial incentives to small and medium-sized employers for up to $5,000 per apprentice per year for a max of two Level 1 apprentices per employer; or $10,000 per apprentice per year for a max of two Level 1 apprentices if the apprentice identifies as being from an under-represented group. Only employers with 499 or fewer paid employees can receive the financial support.

Included among the 39 Red Seal Trades available for support are:

• Gasfitter – Class A
• Gasfitter – Class B
• Plumber
• Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
• Steamfitter/Pipefitter
